Assassin’s Creed is a historical action-adventure video game series and media franchise published by Ubisoft and developed mainly by its studio Ubisoft Montreal using the game engine Anvil and its more advanced derivatives.

The series features historical fiction, science fiction, and fictional characters intertwined with real-world historical events and historical figures. In most games, players control a historical Assassin while also playing as an Assassin Initiate or someone caught in the Assassin–Templar conflict in the present-day framing story.

Reception:

The Assassin’s Creed series has received mainly positive reviews from critics, with Blast Magazine calling it “the standout series on [the seventh generation] of consoles”.

It has been praised for its ambitious game design, visuals, and narratives, but criticized for its technical issues and annual releases of almost every installment the series’ shift, which started in Origins, towards prioritizing role-playing mechanics over stealth in several games has been considered polarizing.

As of September 2019, the series had sold over 140 million copies with over 95 million players, becoming Ubisoft’s best selling franchise and one of the highest selling video game franchises of all time.

By September 2022, total sales of the series had reached 200 million.

The franchise reportedly generated around €4 billion in the decade leading up to 2024.
